The Images & Trains Project was born in summer 2007. Renaud CHODKOWSKI and François ILIOVICI are the founders. Its main objective is to promote a new glance on railway photography. The Project articulates around three axes:
- the website;
- "La Boite à Images" (the forum);
- the PDF magazine
The website is a space which gathers the various aspects of the Project. It has of three great sections.
The PDF magazine. Anyone can download he various numbers. Each number is accompanied by datas complementary to the subjects presented. It gives more place to the pictures in the magazine.
Presentation of the project in itself. This page is intended to know all about the project. If you have precise questions please contact us through the contact page. A press kit will be available in the near future.
The Exhibition Center. This is the heart of the website of a Project which is primarily devoted to Photography. There are Permanent and Temporary exhibitions and also some themes (Black & White, People & Trains). The pictures we're showing are exemples of the kind of work we want to promote. We would be happy to present your work if it corresponds so that we want.
What kind of pictures do we promote?
There are plenty of galleries about railroads all over Internet. That's why we wish to be different compared to all these websites. So we select the photographs. Here are types of photographs which we seek:
Wedgies (the traditional railroad pictures with sun in the back, etc) but the composition has to be emphasized (landscape, environment, reflections…). A nice train picture where the subject is the rolling stock in itself is not what we're looking for.
Any kind of pictures presenting the railway in an original and artistic way. The originality can come from the composition, the technique (pannings, unusual framings) or from postprocessing (colors, selective saturation)
Black & White pictures. We wish a reak work of b&w and not only a quick desaturation of a color picture. B&w sections on the forum or the Exhibition Center are at your disposal to discover more about this subject.
Pictures illustrating the human life around the railway world: railroaders, travellers or residents near tracks.
Most of Internet websites have a forum and this one does not derogate to the rule! However, it looks more like a blog and a creative space.
The blog aspect is about members who share their photographic work, or their "essays" (*). It is also possible to the photographers to present their work to critics of the members.
The forum also offers various sections to develop the creative skills of the members.
The PDF magazine is another medium to present good qualities pictures, reflexions about Photography, as well as photo-essays. Two to four numbers are planned every year (the periodicity depending on the availability of the members).
Here are topics that the Images & Trains Project wish to do:
- To present railway pictures that are more than “descriptive” (see the insert above).
- To set up initiatives to help those which are working this kind of Photography. This can be “How to” documents or tutorials.
- To encourage the work linking texts and pictures (photo-essays). It is not an usual article about a kind of locomotive or a boring description of a railway line.
What is a photo-essay?
1. The picture is not just an illustration but helps for comprehension on a global scale.
2. Text can be small and in this case pictures are "saying an history".
3. Texts are about histories, thoughts or description of atmospheres.
