Richard Steinheimer book

A Passion for Trains - The Railroad Photography of Richard Steinheimer

Author : Jeff Brouws ; Ed : W.W. Norton & Company - 2004 ; ISBN 0-393-05743-7 ; Language : English

Discover this book

This is THE book to have! You'll discover some great black and white pictures from Richard Steinheimer. He worked in Western America (Milwaukee Road, Southern Pacific) with any kind of weather (even rain). This last point is really important as many railfans consider that only sun rules. And through Steinheimer's eyes, results are stunning. A small english text introduces the reader to the history of the North-American Railroad Photography. It is easy to read and very well made. Non-english readers have to note that they can enjoy this book as most of it is about the pictures.

Steinheimer gives us various themes to work on : depots, night scenes, wilderness areas, rainy weather ... everything you need if you're feeling that your inspiration is going away!

Ted Benson book

One Track Mind

Author : Ted Benson ; Ed : The Boston Mills Press - 2000 ; ISBN 1-55046-273-3 ; Language : English ; 176 pages

"Railroad Photo-Essays for dummies" could have been another title to this book! With twelve black and white photo-essays, Benson teaches us basics of this art. Every essay is made of a synthetic text followed by pictures and their captions. English grammar and vocabulary are very high and non-english readers will need a good dictionary to fully understand.

Benson's pictures are differents than Steinheimer's. Actually, the reader has to appreciate them as a composition with the text.

George Bambery book

A Bulldgog Odyssey

Author : George Bambery ; Ed : Searchlight Video 2004 ; ISBN 0 975 1895 0 6 ; Language : English ; 192 pages

Discover this book

I found this book during a trip "down-under". This is the only "interesting" (in a photographic way) book I could find in Australia. This is a pictorial about "Bulldogs" locomotives (EMDs E and F units). You won't find any technical datas but small texts that give some historical and geographical references to the readers.

The design of the book is modern, very well done. You'll find around one picture per page with many different lights and compositions. This renders very well atmospheres from this side of the planet. A great book to have!

Feunteun and Sabiron book

Diesel USA - Des Rocheuses au Pacifique

Authors : Philippe Feunteun and Rodolphe Sabiron; Ed : Presses et Editions Ferroviaires - 2007 ; ISBN 2-905447-23-0 ; Language : French & English ; 128p

Discover this book

Pictorial books are rare in France, especially when they don't talk about French railways. This one is about Western America and is a good introduction to North American railroading.

Many people turned digital but Philippe and Rodolphe still use middle-format cameras with Fuji Provia films. The quality of the book is good. The cover gives an idea of the authors' style : strong shadows and very selected light. The composition is well done most of the time and emphasizes the Western American amazing landscapes.

Steve Schmollinger book

Desert Railroading

Author : Steve Schmollinger ; Ed : Heimburger House Publishing Company - 1999 ; ISBN 0-911581-50-2 ; Language : English ; 172p

Steve Schmollinger's name is well know for anyone who reads North American magazines or visits rp.net website. Some of his pictures are "vintage" but he also does "artsy" shots like the kind the I&T Project wants to promote. Desert Railroading is a photo-essay about Western Railroads in USA. The first chapter explains how migrations were important for the growth of this geographic area.

Pictures illustrate all faces of Railroading and are in colours. The huge size of the books helps the reader to appreciate landscapes and amazing lights from deserts. Also photographers who like to use telephoto lenses will find many ideas through the book.

Mashima Mitsuhide book

Travelling by train : Japan East and West

Author : Mashima Mitsuhide ; Ed : ? - 2007 East Japan (ISBN 978-4-09-395501-0), 2008 West Japan (ISBN 978-4-09-395502-7) ; Language : Japanese ; 208p

Don't worry, you don't need to read and understand Japanese langage to apprecite these books! Mashima Mitsuhide exposes shortlines all around Japan through his unusual vision. Maps are on every pages to help you to find out where is the picture from.

Mitsuhide's vision is to place trains in their geographical, social or cultural environment. Europeans photographers will find ideas to take pictures of lines that have already been done with a "classical" vision.

Note : if you want to discover Mitsuhide's pictures online, you can visit his galery on the Fujifilm Museum. Just click on the following link.
